The Important things in life- Story of the day

A philosophy professor stood before his class with some items on the table in front of him. When the class began, wordlessly he picked up a very large and empty mayonnaise jar and proceeded to fill it with rocks, about 2 inches in diameter.
He then asked the students if the jar was full. They agreed that it was. So the professor then picked up a box of pebbles and poured them into the jar. He shook the jar lightly. The pebbles, of course, rolled into the open areas between the rocks.
He then asked the students again if the jar was full. They agreed it was.The professor picked up a box of sand and poured it into the jar. Of course, the sand filled up the remaining open areas of the jar.
He then asked once more if the jar was full. The students responded with a unanimous “Yes.”
“Now,” said the professor, “I want you to recognize that this jar represents your life. The rocks are the important things – your family, your partner, your health, your children – things that if everything else was lost and only they remained, your life would still be full. The pebbles are the other things that matter – like your job, your house, your car. The sand is everything else, the small stuff.”

“If you put the sand into the jar first,” he continued, “there is no room for the pebbles or the rocks. The same goes for your life. If you spend all your time and energy on the small stuff, you will never have room for the things that are important to you. Pay attention to the things that are critical to your happiness. Play with your children. Take your partner out dancing. There will always be time to go to work, clean the house, give a dinner party, or fix the disposal.”
“Take care of the rocks first – the things that really matter. Set your priorities. The rest is just sand.”

Happy Pongal

Pongal is a Hindu festival which is observed by people of Tamil Nadu. Pongal is a four days festival and the most important day of Pongal is known as Thai Pongal. Thai Pongal which is the second day of the four days festivity is also celebrated as Sankranti.
The first day is called Bhogi. Many people burn and get rid of old household items and purchase new household items on this day. This marks the start of a new cycle.
Thai Pongal day is celebrated by boiling freshly harvested rice with fresh milk and jaggery in a new clay pot. While boiling the concoction, people let the milk spill over the pot as an auspicious sign of material abundance and prosperity. Later the concoction of rice, milk and jaggery, known as Pongal, is topped with brown sugar, Ghee, cashew nuts and raisins. Many people worship the sun god, Lord Surya by offering prayers on this day. Many people also wear new clothes and women decorate houses with Kolam(designs) using rice flour and red clay.
Next day of Thai Pongal is known as Mattu Pongal. Cattles are decorated and worshipped on Mattu Pongal day. The last and final day of Pongal is known as Kaanum Pongal. It is time for family reunions in Tamil Nadu.
Pongal has many regional names. The most popular variations are:Makar Sankranti,Lohri,Bihu,Hadaga,Poki.

Live and Work - Inspirational Story of the day

Father was a hardworking man who delivered bread as a living to support his wife and three children. He spent all his evenings after work attending classes, hoping to improve himself so that he could one day find a better paying job. Except for Sundays, Father hardly ate a meal together with his family. He worked and studied very hard because he wanted to provide his family with the best money could buy.
Whenever the family complained that he was not spending enough time with them, he reasoned that he was doing all this for them. But he often yearned to spend more time with his family.
The day came when the examination results were announced. To his joy, Father passed, and with distinctions too! Soon after, he was offered a good job as a senior supervisor which paid handsomely.Like a dream come true, Father could now afford to provide his family with life’s little luxuries like nice clothing, fine food and vacation abroad.
However, the family still did not get to see father for most of the week. He continued to work very hard, hoping to be promoted to the position of manager. In fact, to make himself a worthily candidate for the promotion, he enrolled for another course in the open university.
Again, whenever the family complained that he was not spending enough time with them, he reasoned that he was doing all this for them. But he often yearned to spend more time with his family.
Father’s hard work paid off and he was promoted. Jubilantly, he decided to hire a maid to relieve his wife from her domestic tasks. He also felt that their three-room flat was no longer big enough, it would be nice for his family to be able to enjoy the facilities and comfort of a condominium. Having experienced the rewards of his hard work many times before, Father resolved to further his studies and work at being promoted again. The family still did not get to see much of him. In fact, sometimes Father had to work on Sundays entertaining clients. Again, whenever the family complained that he was not spending enough time with them, he reasoned that he was doing all this for them. But he often yearned to spend more time with his family.
As expected, Father’s hard work paid off again and he bought a beautiful condominium overlooking the coast of Singapore. On the first Sunday evening at their new home, Father declared to his family that he decided not to take anymore courses or pursue any more promotions. From then on he was going to devote more time to his family.
Father did not wake up the next day :(

Work and family must have a balance for a happy life.

The last cab ride - Story by Kent Nerburn

Twenty years ago, I drove a cab for a living. One time I arrived in the middle of the night for a pick up at a building that was dark except for a single light in a ground floor window.

Under these circumstances, many drivers would just honk once or twice, wait a minute, then drive away. But I had seen too many impoverished people who depended on taxis as their only means of transportation. Unless a situation smelled of danger, I always went to the door. This passenger might be someone who needs my assistance, I reasoned to myself. So I walked to the door and knocked.

“Just a minute,” answered a frail, elderly voice.

I could hear something being dragged across the floor. After a long pause, the door opened. A small woman in her 80′s stood before me. She was wearing a print dress and a pillbox hat with a veil pinned on it, like somebody out of a 1940s movie. By her side was a small nylon suitcase.

The apartment looked as if no one had lived in it for years. All the furniture was covered with sheets. There were no clocks on the walls, no knickknacks or utensils on the counters. In the corner was a cardboard box filled with photos and glassware.

“Would you carry my bag out to the car?” she said. I took the suitcase to the cab, then returned to assist the woman. She took my arm and we walked slowly toward the curb. She kept thanking me for my kindness.

“It’s nothing,” I told her. “I just try to treat my passengers the way I would want my mother treated.”

“Oh, you’re such a good boy,” she said. When we got in the cab, she gave me an address, then asked, “Could you drive through downtown?”

“It’s not the shortest way,” I answered quickly.

“Oh, I don’t mind,” she said. “I’m in no hurry. I’m on my way to a hospice.”

I looked in the rear view mirror. Her eyes were glistening.

“I don’t have any family left,” she continued. “The doctor says I don’t have very long.”

I quietly reached over and shut off the meter. “What route would you like me to take?” I asked.

For the next two hours, we drove through the city. She showed me the building where she had once worked as an elevator operator. We drove through the neighborhood where she and her husband had lived when they were newlyweds. She had me pull up in front of a furniture warehouse that had once been a ballroom where she had gone dancing as a girl.

Sometimes she’d ask me to slow in front of a particular building or corner and would sit staring into the darkness, saying nothing.

As the first hint of sun was creasing the horizon, she suddenly said, “I’m tired. Let’s go now.”

We drove in silence to the address she had given me.

It was a low building, like a small convalescent home, with a driveway that passed under a portico. Two orderlies came out to the cab as soon as we pulled up. They were solicitous and intent, watching her every move. They must have been expecting her. I opened the trunk and took the small suitcase to the door. The woman was already seated in a wheelchair.

“How much do I owe you?” she asked, reaching into her purse.

“Nothing,” I said.

“You have to make a living,” she answered.

“There are other passengers.”

Almost without thinking, I bent and gave her a hug. She held onto me tightly.

“You gave an old woman a little moment of joy,” she said. “Thank you.”

I squeezed her hand, then walked into the dim morning light. Behind me, a door shut. It was the sound of the closing of a life.

I didn’t pick up any more passengers that shift. I drove aimlessly, lost in thought. For the rest of that day, I could hardly talk. What if that woman had gotten an angry driver, or one who was impatient to end his shift? What if I had refused to take the run, or had honked once, then driven away? On a quick review, I don’t think that I have done anything more important in my life. We’re conditioned to think that our lives revolve around great moments. But great moments often catch us unaware—beautifully wrapped in what others may consider a small one.

Give time to our family

After 21 years of marriage, my wife wanted me to take another woman out to dinner and a movie. She said, “I love you, but I know this other woman loves you and would love to spend some time with you.”

The other woman that my wife wanted me to visit was my MOTHER, who has been a widow for 19 years, but the demands of my work and my three children had made it possible to visit her only occasionally. That night I called to invite her to go out for dinner and a movie. “What’s wrong, are you well?” she asked.

My mother is the type of woman who suspects that a late night call or a surprise invitation is a sign of bad news. “I thought that it would be pleasant to spend some time with you,” I responded. “Just the two of us.” She thought about it for a moment, and then said, “I would like that very much.”

That Friday after work, as I drove over to pick her up I was a bit nervous. When I arrived at her house, I noticed that she, too, seemed to be nervous about our date. She waited in the door with her coat on. She had curled her hair and was wearing the dress that she had worn to celebrate her last wedding anniversary. She smiled from a face that was as radiant as an angel’s. “I told my friends that I was going to go out with my son, and they were impressed, “she said, as she got into the car. “They can’t wait to hear about our meeting.”

We went to a restaurant that, although not elegant, was very nice and cozy. My mother took my arm as if she were the First Lady. After we sat down, I had to read the menu. Her eyes could only read large print. Half way through the entries, I lifted my eyes and saw Mom sitting there staring at me. A nostalgic smile was on her lips. “It was I who used to have to read the menu when you were small,” she said. “Then it’s time that you relax and let me return the favor,” I responded. During the dinner, we had an agreeable conversation – nothing extraordinary but catching up on recent events of each other’s life. We talked so much that we missed the movie. As we arrived at her house later, she said, “I’ll go out with you again, but only if you let me invite you.” I agreed.

“How was your dinner date?” asked my wife when I got home. “Very nice. Much more so than I could have imagined,” I answered.

A few days later, my mother died of a massive heart attack. It happened so suddenly that I didn’t have a chance to do anything for her. Some time later, I received an envelope with a copy of a restaurant receipt from the same place mother and I had dined. An attached note said: “I paid this bill in advance. I wasn’t sure that I could be there; but nevertheless, I paid for two plates – one for you and the other for your wife. You will never know what that night meant for me. I love you, son.”

At that moment, I understood the importance of saying in time: “I LOVE YOU” and to give our loved ones the time that they deserve. Nothing in life is more important than your family. Give them the time they deserve, because these things cannot be put off till “some other time.”

A Meaningful Life is not being rich

A Meaningful Life is not being rich, being
popular, being highly educated or

It Is about being real, being humble,
being strong and being able to share
ourselves and touch the lives of others.
It is only then that we could have a

Do not chase People, Friends,........

Chasing people around in life will be of no benefit to you in the long run. This is mostly because you can't make people be who you want them to be, people will always do what they truly want to do, deep down inside. What you can do is make extraordinary effort each day to be you, and to do what is in your heart, and work hard at it.
The people who deserve to be in your life will come in your life, and not only will they just be a part of your life like the people of your past, but they will stay in your life as well. Cut the slack out of your life, and let go of the people that are only bringing you down. There is no reason to be burdened continually by people who don't believe in you, when there are people out there that will.
I don't chase people when they walk away. It's not that they're not important. I just believe that if they want me in their life, they'll stay :). If your best friend pulls away, don't chase after her.Just get busy yourself. Now's the time to think about your interests, and start new activities.I had an experience lately.
The biggest reason why friends lose contact with each other, or avoid each other, is because they have nothing to gain from the other friend anymore! It’s strange, but it’s the bitter truth. Friends lose each other because there’s no reason to keep in touch anymore. You may subconsciously feel like you’re having a better time with someone else, which may lead to you ignoring an older best friend because, quite simply, one of you don’t need the other person anymore.
Friends drift apart because they no longer have anything to talk about, no longer have anything to share, and one of you started believing you’re better than the other.
Your life will get better when you realize it’s better to be alone than to chase people who don’t really care about you.Time alone can prove the worth of friendship. As time goes by we lose the the false ones and keep the best. True friends stay when all the rest are gone.

Remember your school Life once again

Remembering my school days is like traveling down my memory lane and bringing a big smile on my face :) .Those twelve years of my School life were truly awesome!!!they flew like a rocket.. but very special for me! it gave me so many experiences. In this wonderful school of mine, I learnt to write, to play and to fly like a free bird. I was happy and content with my group of friends, and with myself..

(Photos- courtesy Facebook page)

It was a carefree, hassle free life. School days run on friendship and mutual trust. If maintained well, it is everlasting.Number of students in every section in a class used to range between forty and fifty. So, one used to have numerous classmates. I was wondering "Where are those classmates now? How are they? What they have become?" etc . It is very difficult to find answers to all those questions. Now with the development of information technology, a website like facebook  can provide details about our classmates . It is a way to revive friendship once again.
I do remember my school prayers and Assembly at the morning .Lunch break was always fun filled with chit chats.Evening time after school there was a long walk home.  I would dawdle my way home, weighed down by my school bag filled with books and all other necessities. The way to go anywhere was just my bicycle in those days.
In our school time our ambitions would have no bounds at all. It is when we dream and dream.school life is really one of the exciting phases of our lives. Our teenage falls during school days only. It is during school days we attain physical as well as mental maturity and starts talking about love & life. School days are not confined merely to four walls of a classroom; they extend far beyond those four walls.
In classroom a long bell used to awaken us. Often we remember those happy moments. We have to be attentive and serious in a class. We have to be pin drop silence during a class. Our discipline depends upon the teacher. As soon as a period was over, school bell used to ring, our teacher used to leave our class . It was a great relief for every one of us. What noise we used to make. .These are our memories only now.
How can we forget the stress  which we used to have during exam period. Some are prepared to face examinations at anytime. Some start their preparations only when examinations are fast approaching . I used to burn midnight oil during exam period. How happy one would be once the examinations are over.  How anxiously I used to wait for vacations.
They are the golden period of our life...
I remember....Gang of friends
                     Boring Uniforms
                     Group Photos
                     Rocking Annual days
                     Youth festival
                     Report card
                     Farewell
                     Last Board Exam
Nick names of teachers & school mates
                     Bus Stand Comedies
Unity of standing together when a question is asked in the class.
                     Last bench wits
                     Birthday Treats
                     Last Minute Studies
                     Tuition class .......................and so on...
A sweet hug at the end of each day..
Do u remember those days ..?

Dedicated to All My Best & Precious Friends, who were Part Of My HAPPY DAYS! .

Book Review - Windmills of the Gods

This book, like many of sheldon's other novels, are centered on a woman. Mary Ashley, a university professor in Kansas, is appointed ambassador to Romania.Mary receives much acclaim and over night she becomes one of the most famous and influential people in the world. However, she finds herself in the middle of a dangerous conspiracy. Little does she know that the one she trust might betray her to the hands of the world's famous assassin. How Mary tackles these, her love life and her children is a feat to read.
There is enough twist and turns to get the reader wondering who is the villain and who is the true hero(I got it early :P) .One of the most surprising  was the character of Angel, the assassin! I really like the plot. And those final twists were freaking awesome.

Fourth of July

In the United States, Independence Day, commonly known as the Fourth of July, is a federal holiday commemorating the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, declaring independence from the Kingdom of Great Britain. Independence Day is commonly associated with fireworks, parades, barbecues, carnivals, fairs, picnics, concerts, baseball games, political speeches and ceremonies, and various other public and private events celebrating the history, government, and traditions of the United States. Independence Day is the national day of the United States.
In 1775, people in New England began fighting the British for their independence. On July 2, 1776, the Congress secretly voted for independence from Great Britain. The Declaration of Independence was first published two days later on July 4, 1776. The first public reading of the Declaration of Independence was on July 8, 1776. Delegates began to sign the Declaration of Independence on August 2, 1776. In 1870, Independence Day was made an unpaid holiday for federal employees. In 1941, it became a paid holiday for them.
The first description of how Independence Day would be celebrated was in a letter from John Adams to his wife Abigail on July 3, 1776. He described "pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires, and illuminations" throughout the United States. However, the term "Independence Day" was not used until 1791.
Interestingly, Thomas Jefferson and John Adams, both signers of the Declaration of Independence and presidents of the United States, died on July 4, 1826 - exactly 50 years after the adoption of the declaration. It is also important to note that Native Americans lived in the country and each tribe had its own nation and government prior to the European settlers.

I love working in the garden and showing or telling others about it. While you are here take a look around, let me know what you think.

Nothing is Impossible.

A young man working in the army was constantly humiliated because he believed in God.One day the captain decided to humiliate him before the troops. He called the young man and said:
- Young man, take the key and go and park the Jeep in front.

The young man replied:
- I can not drive!

The captain said:
- But then ask your assistance from God! Show us that He exists!

The young man took the key and walked to the vehicle, praying the whole time.As a result he parked the Jeep to the place perfectly well as the captain wanted. The young man came out of the jeep and saw them all crying.

They all said together:
- We want to serve your God!

The young soldier was astonished, he wanted to know what was going on?Captain was crying, and he opened the hood of the jeep showing the young man that the car had no engine.

Then the boy said:
See? This is the God I serve, the God who gives life to what does not exist. You may think there are things that still impossible.

THIS GOD OF IMPOSSIBILITY WILL BE YOUR GOD TODAY!
